On this occasion, young and old celebrate their mother with a phone call, a gift, a bouquet of flowers. Mamas are celebrated all over the world and in most countries in the month of May. It is wrongly believed that this celebration dates from the dark Pétain years when he only rehabilitated it to make it a liturgical celebration, the mother being placed on a pedestal under the Vichy regime.

In reality, Mother's Day dates back to ancient Greek times, during spring ceremonies in honor of Rhea, the mother of the gods and especially Zeus. In the 15th century, the English celebrated Mothering Day, at the start of Lent. In Europe, it was at the time of the First World War that this grandiose tribute to mothers was paid. Since then, every May, we put madre in the spotlight.

A tour of the Marais where we compete with ideas for the big day.

Barthouil and Méert delight us

From Thursday May 23 to Sunday May 26, a joint operation by the two houses will delight gourmets. At Barthouil, we have been making foie gras and salmon fumons for three generations, in the Orthe region.

In 1929, the Barthouil charcuterie in the village of Peyrehorade, already known for its market, was a great success. You can taste foie gras, confit and local salmon. In 1958, the boss left for Denmark to refine his know-how. Since then, this family house has been passed down from father to son.

To celebrate mothers and its establishment on rue de Bretagne Méert, the legendary Lille house which is also one of the oldest patisseries in France - it has existed since 1761 - is offering us a waffle.

A good reason to (re)discover the Proust madeleine of General de Gaulle or Amélie Nothomb and all the gourmet products that hide in the shadow of this blond oval which delights young and old.

The ultra slim waffle, its famous specialty crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, made from a brioche dough seized in a few seconds and filled with sugar, Madagascar vanilla and butter.

Thanks to this gourmet partnership, a customer from Méert, with an average purchase price of 50 euros can go to Barthouil, and, upon receipt of an invitation coupon (30 coupons distributed), he discovers local products, tastes and leaves with a free tarama. Conversely, customers at Barthouil can go to Méert to taste a good Madagascar vanilla waffle free of charge.

Johanna Roques, after twenty years spent in the audiovisual sector, decided to turn her passion into a profession. In the years 2012-2014, she obtained her pastry chef diploma and launched into the adventure. Queen of cakes as beautiful as they are delicious: vanilla or pistachio flans, she is also known for her Lebanese tarts (pistachio and orange blossom) and lemon basil.

For Mother's Day, Johanna is concocting gluten-free Mamma Fresa. A soft biscuit with vanilla and Hojicha tea for 7 euros 20 per slice or 38 euros for a six-piece cake. We're looking forward to it.
