It's 19 p.m. on this Friday evening when we push open the door of La Perla, at the corner of rue François-Miron and rue du Pont-Louis-Philippe, in the 4th. Opened in the 1990s, this tequila bar is part of the Marais landscape. And it has proven itself. That evening, we were not the only ones to have planned an “after work” event with friends: the tables were full, the conversations were in full swing, the sound system was playing – not too loud, just enough not to prevent conversations – salsa from Fania All Star, the legendary Latin orchestra.

We sit at the bar, in the front row to watch the bartenders mix cocktails based on tequila, pisco, mezcal. We opt for an “El Gazon” margarita (tequila, fresh mint, agave syrup, fresh fruit juice) and Pisco Sours (pisco, fresh lemon juice, cane sugar), a great Peruvian classic.

While the tacos (tasty and copious) and the guacamole arrive in front of us, the ceiling fans start to slow down and Celia Cruz sings Usted Abuso (“hit” later taken up by Michel Fugain under the title Fais comme l'oiseau). We order a second round: Smoky Margarita and Ocho Tiger. Also successful. A look around the room allows you to verify that the varied clientele is having a good time in a friendly atmosphere supported by pleasant service. Buena onda, as they say in Mexico (Good vibes, in English).

A pearl, this Perla.
