We asked to Lucia, who gives advice on Chinese medicine on InstagramSome advice for this new year.
Inspired by the cycles of nature, Chinese medicine encourages listening to the body's signals rather than silencing them. It considers the human being as a whole – emotions, diet, sleep, breathing – permeated by vital energy, Qi.
Following its main principles (harmony of yin and yang, circulation of meridians, prevention rather than repair), these 10 tips offer a gentle and accessible way to truly take care of yourself on a daily basis, without injunctions or guilt.
At the start of the year, Traditional Chinese Medicine encourages us to slow down rather than undergo abrupt transformations. The goal is not perfection, but harmony: listening to your body, supporting your energy, and adapting to the changing seasons. Here are 10 simple, easy-to-implement daily practices to lay the foundation for a more balanced and mindful year.
- Drink something hot upon waking
A glass of hot or warm water first thing in the morning stimulates digestion and gently awakens the body. Ideally, opt for hot drinks throughout the day. - Keep your feet nice and warm
Socks and slippers are essential, especially in winter. In Chinese Medicine, the feet are linked to Kidney energy, considered vital energy. - Dry your hair thoroughly
Avoid going out or sleeping with wet hair. Cold and dampness can penetrate through the head and neck, contributing to migraines and tension. - Eat hot food more often than cold food
Soups, cooked dishes and steamed vegetables are easier to digest and more energy-dense for the body, especially in cold weather. - Sleep before 23pm
Going to bed before 23 p.m. allows energy to work deeply within the organs and gut, promoting regeneration. Even 15 to 30 minutes earlier can make a difference. - Move gently every day
Walking, light stretching or conscious movements allow energy to circulate without exhausting the body. - Calm the mind regularly
Self-massage, deep breathing or Qi Gong help to release tension and calm the mind. - Listen to the body's signals
Fatigue, digestive upset, or pain are all signs to heed. Slowing down, lightening your diet, and getting enough rest then become essential. - Gently pat the body
Using fingertips or soft fists, tapping arms, legs and torso for 1 to 2 minutes restarts the flow of energy and awakens the body. - Supporting the Liver in Spring
Spring is the ideal season to support a gentle liver detox and get back on track after winter.
These simple gestures remind us that well-being is built on regularity and self-care. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, every little action counts: it is these actions, taken together, that nourish a more stable and lasting energy throughout the year.
